May 22: Daily briefing on novel coronavirus cases in China

On May 21, 31 provincial-level regions on the Chinese mainland as well as the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps reported 4 new cases of confirmed infections (2 imported cases in Sichuan province and 2 indigenous cases in Jilin province), 1 new case of suspected infections (an imported case in Shanghai municipality), and no deaths. 6 patients were released from hospital after being cured. 255 people who had had close contact with infected patients were freed from medical observation. The number of serious cases remained unchanged.

As of 24:00 on May 21, 31 provincial-level regions on the Chinese mainland as well as the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps had reported 1,711 cases of imported confirmed infections and no deaths. In all, 1,668 patients had been cured and discharged from hospital. There still remained 43 confirmed cases (including 2 in serious condition) and 7 suspected cases.

As of 24:00 on May 21, the National Health Commission had received reports of 82,971 confirmed cases and 4,634 deaths in 31 provincial-level regions on the Chinese mainland and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, and in all 78,255 patients had been cured and discharged from hospital. There still remained 82 confirmed cases (including 8 in serious condition) and 7 suspected cases. So far, 741,344 people have been identified as having had close contact with infected patients. 4,958 are now under medical observation.

On May 21, 31 provincial-level regions on the Chinese mainland as well as the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps reported 35 new asymptomatic cases (all are indigenous cases). 45 asymptomatic cases were freed from medical observation (including 3 imported cases) and no asymptomatic cases became confirmed cases. As of 24:00 on May 21, 365 asymptomatic cases were still under medical observation (including 26 imported cases).

As of 24:00 on May 21, 1,549 confirmed infections had been reported in the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and Taiwan province: 1,063 in Hong Kong (4 had been dead and 1,029 had been cured and discharged from hospital), 45 in Macao (all had been cured and discharged from hospital) and 441 in Taiwan (7 had been dead and 407 had been cured and discharged from hospital).
