Rescue operations underway in Guangdong to protect people from floods

Heavy rains have been drenching Guangdong for days, resulting in massive flooding, power outages and traffic disruptions. Relief teams, which are made up of police, firefighters, veterans, sanitation workers and volunteers, have been dispatched to disaster-affected areas for emergency response rescue.

Guangzhou

More than 600 people were relocated by June 15 in Zengcheng District

On June 14, sudden rainstorms caused extensive floods in Zengcheng District of Guangzhou. According to local police, they received a total of 11 rescue calls from 00:00 to 18:00 that day.

Over 160 police staff carrying rescue boats, life-buoys and other equipment were dispatched by local authorities to direct traffic and assist flood victims.

By June 15, more than 600 people had been saved or relocated to safe places, 21 stranded vehicles had been rescued, while no casualties reported.

1405 rescue workers deployed for emergency preparedness and disaster relief in Liwan District

Leaning against the Pearl River, Liwan District is one of the heavily-affected places in this round of rainstorms combining with high astronomical tides.

It is reported that before the astronomical tide, which was the heaviest in 100 years, rose water level of the Liwan District to 2.9 meters, local authorities had installed 47 flood baffles with a length of 1.12 kilometers for low-lying areas. Also, sandbags had been put in place for reinforcement.

In addition, a total of 1,405 rescue workers from fields of water supply, militia, public security, fire, housing, greening, gas, electricity and health care, had been dispatched to reinforce city's infrastructure or places at high risk of flooding including metro stations, underground parking lots, tunnels, construction sites and dilapidated houses.

Huizhou: Police helped over 100 trapped students return home

On the afternoon of June 14, the police station of Yonghan Town in Huizhou received a call from Yongqiang Middle School, that more than 100 students had been stranded by raging waters near the school, appealing for rescue.

As soon as they received the call, local police launched immediate rescue efforts, using rubber boats and dragging away trapped students with manpower, travelling back and forth many times to help students return home safe, and directing traffic for local villagers. It is reported that the rescue operation transferred more than 100 students as well as over 140 villagers.
