A resonant whistle of a train fully loaded with timber imported from Southeast Asia marked the official opening of Nansha Port Terminal South of Guangzhou Port on February 8.

Departing from the North Area of Nansha International Logistic Center, the train was heading for Jiangmen, one of the biggest timber markets in Guangdong province.

"This is the first train carrying timber launched from Nansha Port Terminal South. Compared with the previous route to Jiangmen by barge, this train can save 1-2 days without adding costs," said Wu Mingfeng, General Manager of Dezheng Freight Agency Co., Ltd.

On December 31 of 2021, the railway in Nansha Port extended its route to Nansha Port Terminal. Now, the railway has further extended more than 9 km to Nansha Port Terminal South, signaling terminals in Nansha Port were fully connected.

According to Guangzhou Port Group, it has opened 29 rail-sea intermodal trains covering the major regions of the Pearl River Delta, 12 China-Europe (China-Asian) international freights and set up 30 inland ports. With Guangzhou Port being the core hub and including branch ports, dry ports as well as new multimodal transport channels coming into service, a comprehensive logistics network system connecting the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Chinese mainland and overseas countries is now well underway.

Keeping up with the trend of market development and taking the advantages of Nansha Port, Guangzhou Port Group will accelerate the opening of intercity trains linking Heyuan and Shaoguan in northern Guangdong, inter-provincial trains linking Hunan, Jiangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan provinces, as well as international rail-sea traffic linking Central Europe and Central Asia, in a bid to break the development bottleneck of multimodal transport of imports and exports as well as to boost the speed and efficiency of international trade.
