Nanshan and Futian districts were selected as two of the 48 State-level intellectual property rights (IPR) model county-level regions, the China National Intellectual Property Administration unveiled Monday.

The administration launched the selection of IPR demonstration county-level regions nationwide early this year, as part of efforts to develop the country’s IPR power, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported. The two districts’ model period will be valid until July 2025.

The IPR model county-level region title was another national honor Nanshan received to recognize its achievements in IPR creation, application and protection, after it was chosen in July to be among the country’s first pilot areas of innovative trade secret protection.

Nanshan has been steadily pushing ahead with its IPR projection mechanism reform and IPR management system innovation that combines the three functions of decision mechanism, service platform and operating carrier.

Similarly, the district is dedicated to the connection of invention, usage, protection, management and service throughout the whole IPR chain.

The Nanshan IPR Protection Center, the first in China, was established to offer enterprises one-stop services, including IPR information retrieval, IPR assessment, legal consultation and notary service.

To help companies address IPR disputes while going global, Nanshan also built an overseas IPR-related service platform and compiled several service guides collecting IP dispute cases in other countries.

Moreover, the district has unveiled a slew of policies to enhance IPR governance and development. The development of IPR power has been included in Nanshan’s 14th five-year plan (2021-2025), and preferential policies in areas like IP protection and use, public service, financial empowerment, and talent introduction have been issued.

Data showed, as of this June, Nanshan’s valid domestic invention patents had reached 92,283, accounting for 41.8% of the city’s total. The district’s number of invention patent ownership per 10,000 people was 511.5, 4.1 times that of the city and 23.6 times that of the country.

Additionally, Nanshan is home to seven colleges and universities, seven State-level key laboratories and nine labs with Nobel laureates.
