Profile of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, comprised of the two Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macao, and the nine municipalities of Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhaoqing, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Huizhou, Zhuhai, Zhongshan, and Jiangmen in Guangdong Province, is one of the areas with the highest degree of opening-up and the strongest economic vitality in China and is also an important carrier for the country to build a world-class urban agglomeration and to participate in the global competition.


The Timeline


Since 2008,

the planning and construction of the Guangdong Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has been continuously promoted by the central and local governments.

 

In 2014,

Shenzhen government work report mentioned the bay area economy for the first time.

 

In 2015,

the top-level blueprint of the Belt and Road Initiative suggested deepening of cooperation with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and building of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

 

In June 2016,

the first Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Forum was held in Hong Kong.

 

In March 2017,

the Central Government work report for the first time mentioned the building of the Guangdong Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, raising the project to the status of national strategy.

 

In July 2017,

a framework agreement was signed to promote the building of the greater bay area.

 

In October 2017,

the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China proposed to enable overall progress in the mutually beneficial cooperation between the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao by

focusing on the building of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

 

In January 2018,

the work report of the Guangdong Provincial Government proposed to accelerate the building of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in 2018, and to implement the outline of development planning.

 

In March 2018,

the Central Government work report again mentioned Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and proposed to work out a development plan and to implement it in the same year.


Economic Achievements

 

The economic aggregate of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has increased for four consecutive years, with its GDP reaching 10184.3 billion yuan in 2017.
