Overview:
Malacca state is located on the western side of the Malay Peninsula, covering an area of 1,720 square kilometers with a total population of 920,000. Zheng He (1371-1433), the famed Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) navigator, visited Malacca five times during his seven voyages, bringing Chinese goods such as silk, tea, and porcelain, as well as advanced production techniques, which helped Malacca become a prosperous trade center at that time. Today, the main industries in Malacca are tourism and manufacturing, with the state's per capita GDP surpassing the national average of Malaysia. In July 2008, Malacca city, the state capital, was officially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
