Guangdong establishes sister-province relationship with Guadalcanal Province of Solomon Islands

On May 15th, a signing ceremony of establishing sister-province relationship between Guangdong Province and Guadalcanal Province of the Solomon Islands was held in Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong Province.

At present, Guangdong has established sister province relationship with 49 provinces around the world.

On September 21, 2019, China established a diplomatic relationship with the Solomon Islands. 16 days later, Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare made his first official visit to China. During his visit, Solomon Islands and Guangdong had signed a MoU on promoting exchanges in various sectors.

According to the Solomon Islands Chinese Association, there are about 6,000 overseas Chinese in the country, most of whom come from Jiangmen city of Guangdong. The city has played an important role in the exchanges between Solomon Islands and Guangdong.

Jiangmen and the capital of the Solomon Islands, Honiara City, signed a sister city agreement last year. This is the first sister cities between China and the Solomon Islands.

In order to increase capacity on dealing with natural disasters in the Pacific islands, the China-Pacific Island Countries Center for Disaster Risk Reduction and Cooperation was officially launched in Jiangmen City in February this year.

The Solomon Islands consists of more 900 islands, and Guadalcanal Island is the largest among them. As the location of Honiara, Guadalcanal Province serves as the financial center of the countries.
