Huang Kunming, secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, met with David Adeang, president of Nauru, in Guangzhou on July 7. Adeang is visiting China for a trip to trace roots and honor ancestors.
Huang welcomed Adeang and briefed him on Guangdong's socio-economic progress. Huang mentioned that since China and Nauru officially renewed diplomatic relations last year, their bilateral ties have entered a new phase, with Guangdong and Nauru making significant progress in mutually beneficial cooperation across various sectors.
"President Adeang's roots-seeking journey exemplifies the strong historical and cultural bonds between China and Nauru, which will further boost exchanges and cooperation between our regions," Huang said. He suggested enhancing people-to-people exchanges, expanding collaboration in infrastructure, healthcare, and cultural tourism, and jointly exploring opportunities in marine resource development, including ocean ranching, deep-sea fishing, and aquatic product processing.
Guangdong is willing to support Nauru in achieving sustainable development and will work on landmark projects that benefit local communities and promote long-term growth, further strengthening China-Nauru relations," Huang added. He invited Adeang to visit Guangdong more to foster closer ties between the two peoples.
Adeang thanked Guangdong for its hospitality, saying that restoring diplomatic ties last year was a historic milestone for Nauru's development and relations. "Guangdong is the homeland of my ancestors, and I hold a special affection for this place," he said. "I firmly believe that increasing cultural and people-to-people exchanges is crucial to strengthening our bilateral relationship. This roots-seeking trip will help deepen grassroots connections and bring new momentum to a shared era of prosperity between Nauru and China."
Also present at the meeting were Qian Bo, China's special envoy for Pacific Island Countries, Lyu Jin, Chinese ambassador to Nauru, and other provincial officials, as well as Chitra Jeremiah, Nauru's ambassador to China.
