Wang Weizhong, governor of Guangdong province, met with the Vanuatu Prime Minister Charlot Salwai and his delegation in Guangzhou, Guangdong province on July 8.

Wang, on behalf of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and the People's Government of Guangdong Province, welcomed Salwai and his delegation and spoke about Guangdong's economic and social development as well as its progress in advancing reforms and opening up.

During their meeting, Salwai emphasized that Vanuatu is a good friend, partner, and brother of China in the Pacific Islands region. Under the framework of the friendly relations between China and Vanuatu, Guangdong and Vanuatu have maintained close ties and friendly exchanges and cooperation, with Guangdong-Vanuatu trade accounting for about one-ninth of China-Vanuatu trade.

In response to the Prime Minister's friendly comment, Wang invited Vanuatu to engage more with Guangdong and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to share development opportunities. He said that Guangdong will earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of both countries and work together with Vanuatu to continue strengthening practical cooperation in trade, agriculture, fisheries, culture and tourism, climate change, and disaster prevention and mitigation, as well as further promoting people-to-people friendship and exchanges, and contributing more to the development of China-Vanuatu relations.

Salwai expressed gratitude for China's long-term support for Vanuatu's development. He affirmed Vanuatu's firm adherence to the one-China principle and its support for the Belt and Road Initiative and the Global Development Initiative.

The PM stressed the importance Vanuatu attaches to its friendly relationship with China and expressed the desire to further deepen cooperation with Guangdong in areas such as trade and investment, food and energy, infrastructure, and disaster prevention and mitigation. He also welcomed more Guangdong enterprises to invest in Vanuatu, aiming to achieve greater results in bilateral cooperation.
