Guangdong province's GDP is projected to surpass a new milestone of 14 trillion yuan ($1.9 trillion) for 2024, maintaining its position as the top-ranking province in the country for 36 consecutive years, according to a senior government official.

Guangdong Governor Wang Weizhong said the province's comprehensive economic strength increased steadily last year while delivering the government work report to the local annual legislative meeting, which opened on Wednesday in Guangzhou, the provincial capital.

Guangdong's import and export volume is expected to maintain the top position in the country for the 39th consecutive year, exceeding 9 trillion yuan, with a growth rate of 9.8 percent. Its import and export volume contributes 38.7 percent of the national trade increment.

"Faced with the significant challenge of climbing towards high-quality development, we remain steadfast and optimize our industrial structures by promoting the mutual reinforcement of industry and technology," said Wang.

The province's GDP growth rate is set at around 5 percent for 2025, according to the government work report.
