China's Diplomacy in the New Era
Guangzhou surpasses 1 trillion yuan in retail sales, foreign trade

Guangzhou has become the third city in China to achieve a total scale of over one trillion yuan ($143.59 billion) in both retail sales of consumer goods and import-export value. The announcement was made in the municipal government work report presented on Jan 19.

The report highlights Guangzhou’s robust and diversified economic profile during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), including the formation of six advanced manufacturing clusters, each with an output value exceeding 100 billion yuan.

The city has also strengthened its global standing, now ranking sixth in the Nature Index science city rankings and 22nd in the GaWC world city list, cementing its status as a growing global metropolis.

Notably, spatial development strategies have injected new momentum into Guangzhou. The Economic and Technological Development Area of the city ranks second nationally, and key commercial districts like Tianhe and Pazhou CBD are ranked among the national top-10 central business areas.

The achievements demonstrate Guangzhou's drive to pioneer high-quality development as a leading metropolis.

Looking ahead, the city's development plan outlines a vision to reinforce its role as a pivotal national center and a core engine for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Strategic goals include building a more modern industrial system, achieving breakthroughs in technology, and elevating per capita GDP to the level of moderately developed economies by 2030.
