The China-Papua New Guinea Business Roundtable was held in Guangzhou on April 29, with PNG Prime Minister James Marape delivering a keynote speech. The event brought together government officials and business leaders from both sides to explore deeper economic cooperation.
Marape said that this year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between PNG and China, describing China as an important partner and close friend. He highlighted that a number of Guangdong enterprises have already invested in PNG across multiple sectors, making the province a vital bridge for PNG's engagement with China. He expressed hope for expanded cooperation in mining, forestry, fisheries, manufacturing, infrastructure, cultural exchanges and special economic zones.
Zhang Guozhi, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and vice governor of Guangdong Provincial People's Government, said PNG has become Guangdong's largest trading partner among Pacific Island countries. He encouraged PNG businesses to participate in major events such as the Canton Fair and expressed readiness to explore closer bilateral trade and two-way investment.
Liu Jiannan, vice chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, and PNG Minister for International Trade and Investment Richard Maru, also addressed the roundtable, pledging to deepen trade and industrial collaboration.
